American Hawaii Cruise Line
The only U.S. registered cruise line (all the other U.S. based cruise lines are registered somewhere else) with American built ship and all American crew. The company has been created to cruise specifically in Hawaiian waters. Very much family orientated cruises (families with children and retired couples). Somewhat more quiet atmosphere without 24-hour entertainment and night-disco activities. Gambling is forbidden in the State of Hawaii, so there isn't any casino staff onboard. All other shipboard positions are available, but mostly to U.S. citizens (unlike all the other cruise lines which hire personnel from all over the world). American Hawaii Cruises is planning to built two new 1.900-passenger ships. The first is expected to enter service by 2003.

The parent company of Costa Cruise Line, the Italian based Costa Crociere was bought by Carnival Cruise Line in 1997. Needless to say that Carnival left Costa operating as a separate brand, preserving the style and the image Costa has created for over 50 years in the passenger ship business. As the phrase "Cruising Italian Style" implies, everything onboard seems to be molto Italiano, from the ships design to the celebrated Italian cuisine. When Carnival Cruise Line acquired Holland America some years ago they were smart enough to leave all the operations in the hands of Holland America's management instead of just repainting the ships with the Carnival logo. Holland America has established quite different image than Carnival, targeting completely different sort of passengers (more mature folks) and offering more formal and stylish cruises and service. The majority of Holland America passengers do not even know that the company is owned by Carnival. Orient Lines
The cruise line originated in 1991 with the purchase of the former Russian ocean liner Alexandr Pushkin, a ship with ice-strengthened hull. After two years of rebuilding the ship was renamed to Marco Polo. The idea from the very beginning was to offer upscale cruises for experienced and adventurous passengers to exotic, unusual places at reasonable prices. Marco Polo is the largest ship cruising to offbeat destinations on regular basis and one of only two luxury ships with permission to cruise Antarctica. Pertanyaan yang kelihatan remeh ini, sesungguhnya mempunyai bobot yang besar sekali artinya dan amat menentukan masa depan perusahaan yang akan didirikan tersebut. Bahkan, kemungkinan besar juga menentukan masa depan sipengusaha sendiri. Jadi, bagaimanakah cara yang paling tepat untuk menentukan bidang usaha ?



Menurut logika, sebuah usaha yang berpeluang untuk berjalan dengan lancar adalah usaha yang tingkat persaingannya kecil, tetapi tingkat kebutuhan pada konsumennya tinggi. Tentu dengan asumsi bahwa faktor-faktor penentu lainnya sudah terpenuhi. Untuk bisa menekan tingkat persaingan sampai sekecil mungkin, maka seyogyanya produk yang akan dijual merupakan produk yang mempunyai sifat-sifat orisinil, belum pernah dibuat orang lain, atau bila produk itu berupa produk yang sudah ada sebelumnya, sebaiknya mempunyai nilai tambah yang tidak dimiliki oleh produk pesaing.



Banyak kejadian memperlihatkan bahwa kecenderungan orang untuk memulai usaha adalah dengan mengikuti trend saat tertentu. Misalnya, kalau sekarang banyak orang mendirikan ruko (rumah-toko) , maka dengan anggapan usaha yang diminati banyak orang itu pasti menguntungkan, lalu beramai-ramai ikut mendirikan ruko. Pola berpikir seperti ini terlalu menggampangkan, seakan-akan menyamakan trend bisnis dengan trend mode. Dibidang mode, kalau saat ini sedang digemari potongan rambut crew-cut (potongan pendek) misalnya, tidak ada masalah bagi siapa saja untuk meniru. Akan tetapi, kalau kita meniru bidang usaha yang sudah begitu banyak orang lain menjalankannya, berarti kita terjun kedalam suatu lahan yang sudah penuh sesak dengan persaingan. Sulit untuk kita bisa berkembang dalam situasi yang demikian, apalagi bila kita pendatang baru yang sudah “kesiangan” (terlambat).



Sejak tahun-tahun 1970-an, pola “ngikut trend” ini banyak dilakukan orang pada bidang-bidang yang segera menjadi jenuh, seperti mendirikan theater, klub malam, taksi, radio swasta niaga, diskotik, mendirikan apartemen, RSS (rumah sangat sederhana), wartel (warung telekomunikasi) dan lain-lain.



Di bidang finansial bahkan menjadi mode bagi sementara orang baik pengusaha maupun bukan, untuk terjun bermain valas (valuta asing), bursa saham bahkan bursa komoditi. Tidak sedikit mereka yang pengetahuannya terbatas tentang bidang-bidang tersebut ikut-ikutan bermain, lalu tiba-tiba, tanpa mengerti sedikitpun tentang alasannya, uangnya dinyatakan amblas tidak bisa dicegah lagi. Kejadian seperti ini terlalu mengerikan untuk dialami oleh setiap calon wiraswastawan yang punya idealisme.



Alex S. Nitisemito dalam bukunya “Memulai Usaha Dengan Modal Kecil”, memberikan contoh yang bagus tentang seorang pemilik kebun apel yang pada suatu hari menemukan buah apel yang jatuh ketanah bekas dimakan burung. Karena buah apel tersebut ternyata berbau anggur, maka timbullah gagasannya untuk mendirikan usaha minuman sari buah apel.

Yang demikian itu merupakan ide orisinil. Bukan tiruan atau menjiplak ide orang lain. Henry Ford memulai usaha dengan gagasan untuk membuat mobil yang baik bagi masyarakat banyak dengan harga terjangkau, dan usahanya sukses. Begitu juga Bill Gates yang berangan-angan untuk “mengkomputerkan” seluruh dunia, ternyata melesat begitu cepatnya menjadi raja komputer sejagat.



Ide atau gagasan tidak selalu datang begitu saja tanpa disangka-sangka, sehingga orang tidak akan bisa mengetahui kapan ide itu akan datang. Jangan menunggu datangnya ilham, atau mengharapkan bisikan gaib melalui mimpi saat tidur. Ide harus dikejar, dipikirkan dan dicari. Ini suatu bukti yang menguatkan bahwa kewiraswastaan adalah “kerja otak” bukan “kerja otot”. Gagasan bisa datang dan terjadi kapan saja, maka kita harus selalu waspada. Seperti contoh di atas, pemilik kebun apel ada dalam keadaan waspada sehingga ia bisa mencetuskan sebuah ide besar berdasarkan sebuah kejadian kecil. Kalau tidak, ribuan buah apel bekas dimakan burung yang berjatuhan keatas tanah, tetap tinggal membusuk tanpa arti apa-apa bagi siapa pun.
